VOC Detectors for Health & Safety: Choosing the Right One
The most common type of VOC sensor is a photoionization detector (PID). PID sensors have high sensitivity, stability and response time. They can be used on their own or incorporated into an instrument alongside other gas detection technologies, such as electrochemical and metal oxide sensors.
Other types of VOC sensors use infrared technology to detect a variety of VOCs. The VOC molecules absorb infrared light at specific wavelengths, which triggers vibrations. The intensity of the vibrations can then be measured and the concentration of VOCs determined. They also offer excellent sensor drift performance compared to other technologies.
